If you would like to enrich your studies with intercultural experiences, you can choose from a wide range of partner universities and scholarships worldwide.
For a quick and easy way to study abroad, simply follow these steps:
According to the study and exam regulations (German: SPO) of the individual degree programmes of the faculty, you can study subjects abroad that are not offered at HHN. These are in detail:
In most Bachelor's degree programmes, the Faculty of Engineering (TE) has designated credits in the area of specialisation subjects and electives that can be brought in from abroad or generally from another university without proof of content equivalence. In Automotive Systems Engineering, Electrical Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering these are 5 ECTS for specialisation subjects and 10 ETCS for elective subjects, in Mechatronics and Robotics these are 10 specialisation and 10 elective ECTS, regardless of whether similar subjects are offered in Heilbronn or not. The SPO entry reads: ‘Specialisation subject x from another university’ or ‘Technical subject x from another university’ and must be from the field of technology or natural sciences. The competence objectives of the degree programme must be taken into account. In addition, subjects from other universities can be recognised as compulsory, elective or specialisation subjects that are clearly stated in the SPO of the respective degree programme if they match in terms of content. In the case of TE, the six heads of the exam boards for the Bachelor's degree programmes reserve the right to assess this themselves. According to the Treaty of Lisbon, we are obliged to recognise all achievements, the burden of proof that subjects do not overlap is on us.
In most Bachelor's degree programmes in the faculty, 30 ECTS can de facto also be achieved abroad when crediting clearly defined (coextensive) subjects from the SPO. This depends on the personal decision of the head of the exam board. We will try to work out individual solutions for you in the department for international relations and, if necessary, we will point out to you if a semester abroad may extend the duration of your studies in your degree programme. We also advise the heads of the exam boards on their rights and obligations.
A total of 32.5 ECTS can be recognised as a ‘specialisation subject from another university’ or ‘elective subject from another university’ in the Master's degree. Upon application to the respective head of the exam board, engineering, IT or natural science subjects from a Master's degree programme at another university can be chosen as specialisation subjects, in case it takes into account the competence objectives of the degree programme. However, due to the long notice when applying for mobilities, in practice students have to spend an additional semester abroad. However, there is an increasing tendency to carry out Master's theses in partner universities, which is also supported by the faculty.
Conclusion: Talk to the head of your exam board as soon as you have a concrete list of subjects.
IMPORTANT:
1. After talks with the contact persons within the faculty, apply to the International Office. You will need the signature of the representative of your partner university and the international coordinator.
2. The International Office nominates you for one of your preferred universities (usually for the first one, but depending on the number of applications, not everyone gets a place at the first preferred university).
3. You will then receive information which, with the help and support of the International Office, will enable you to apply directly to the university.
You are responsible for the deadlines! Make sure you obtain an English language certificate in good time. We do not issue one, but we can confirm that you have submitted one (e.g. from your school leaving certificate). However, this is not always recognised.
1. Participation in a meeting of all exchange students of the faculty.
2. Being a buddy for an exchange student.
3. Presentation about your experience abroad at an information event to motivate other students.
For information on planning, please also refer to ‘Recognition of Credits’ and ‘Application Procedure’.
Prerequisites for a stay abroad are a completed basic study period at the time of nomination (an absolute must), adequate motivation, our assessment of whether you represent the HHN well abroad, and sufficient places at the partner universities. Most partner universities also require very good English language skills, which must be proven by a test. You can take an Oxford Test of English at Heilbronn University, all others (IELTS/TOEFL/Cambrigde) must be taken in good time and at your own expense!
If there are more applicants to a university than there are places available, there will be a ranking list. After nomination, you must also reapply to the partner university, which has the final decision as to whether you are accepted or not.
You can still go abroad after your final thesis, even if you already ‘have’ all the subjects you need. If your achievements abroad are recognised as a ‘specialisation subject or elective subject from another university’ or in any other way, you can have up to 30 ECTS credits added to your transcript. Although these subjects are not included in your grade, they will be officially recognised by the university. The prerequisite is, of course, recognition in accordance with the SPO.
Deadlines
The following application deadlines apply to Master's students in their first semester:
In consultation with the coordinator for the Master's study course the students may apply until April 15th for winter semester 2025/26 and until May 15th for the summer semester 2026.
The deadline for all other Master's students is 31 January
Selection of the partner university
Depending on the partner university, there are places for the exchange for Bachelor, Master or both. Please check the list of partner universities from the International Office.
