ERASMUS+ for Outgoings

The Erasmus+ programme of the european union

The website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides comprehensive information for students who would like to study abroad free of tuition fees through Erasmus+: Studying abroad in Erasmus+ programme countries.

The DAAD website also provides information on Erasmus+ mobility abroad for internship purposes for students and graduates: Internship abroad. The International Office provides further information on Erasmus internships under the menu item Financing your stay abroad.

A list of Heilbronn University's Erasmus+ partner universities in programme countries with which agreements exist regarding tuition-free mobility abroad for study purposes can be found here. The list shows which partner universities have concluded an Erasmus+ agreement with your faculty and for which level of study (bachelor's, master's). It also lists the partner university advisors whom you can contact for advice on the respective partner university.

All information on applying for an Erasmus+ study place at a partner university can be found under the menu item Application for a semester abroad. You do not need to apply separately for Erasmus funding. The application for an Erasmus study place is linked to the application for funding.

DURATION OF ERASMUS+ FUNDING:

The study period abroad lasts at least 2 months and no more than 12 months. You can complete several stays abroad for study or internship purposes through Erasmus+, but for a maximum of 12 months per study cycle (bachelor's, master's, doctorate).

CALCULATION OF THE ERASMUS+ MOBILITY GRANT

The financial support rates for Erasmus+ study visits in Erasmus+ programme countries are based on the different costs of living in the destination countries (‘programme countries’).

The EU has defined three categories of countries.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), as the national agency for EU higher education cooperation in the Erasmus+ programme, has set the following funding rates (based on 30 days/month) for the Erasmus+ projects 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 (Erasmus+ student mobility with programme countries), depending on the country category.

From Project 2025 onwards, all Erasmus+ grant holders will also receive a flat-rate travel allowance for their outward and return journeys.

Heilbronn University currently has no Erasmus+ partner universities in the countries listed in brackets, and Erasmus+ mobility is not possible within Germany.

Top-ups and real cost support for students and graduates with fewer opportunities

Inclusion and equal opportunities are central concerns of the Erasmus+ programme.

Students with fewer opportunities can receive additional Erasmus funding (top-up) of €250 per month (calculated on a daily basis) for Erasmus mobility lasting several months.
The following target groups are considered students with fewer opportunities:

  • Students with a disability
  • Students with a chronic illness that entails additional financial needs abroad
  • Students who are undertaking their mobility with a child/children
  • Working students
  • First-generation academics

Detailed explanations of the requirements for receiving additional funding can be found under point 3 in the ‘Criteria catalogue for additional financial requirements’.

The following target groups may apply for additional funding as part of a real cost application:

  • Students and graduates with a disability or chronic illness (as evidenced, for example, by a disability card, notification from the regional social welfare office or a medical certificate) that results in additional financial needs while abroad.
  • Students and graduates who are receiving Erasmus+ funding for a period of study or internship abroad and who are travelling abroad with their child/children and who incur expenses for this that are not covered by the flat-rate supplement.

Detailed explanations of the requirements for receiving additional funding as part of a real cost application can be found under point 4 in the ‘Criteria catalogue for additional financial claims’.

Further information, including detailed funding conditions, is available from the International Office.

Actual cost support for preparatory travel for students with a disability or chronic illness. For more information, see point 5 in the flyer ‘Criteria for additional financial support’. It is necessary to contact the International Office at an early stage.

Erasmus top-ups and foreign student grants:                            Top-ups for students with disabilities, chronic illnesses and students who will be travelling abroad with children are not counted as income for the purposes of foreign student loans.

Top-ups for working students and first-time university students are counted as income for the purposes of foreign student loans.

Promotion of ‘green’ travel

If you choose not to travel by airplane or car, you will be rewarded financially!

As part of the new Erasmus programme generation (2021-2027), “green” travel is being promoted through financial incentives. If you choose sustainable means of transport for your journey to and from your university location, your mobility period can be extended by up to six days (from 2024 onwards). In addition, you will receive a higher travel allowance.

DEFINITION OF ‘GREEN TRAVEL’ IN THE ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME

Travel where low-emission modes of transport are used for the majority of the journey, such as bus, train, bicycle or carpooling (Erasmus+ Programme Guide 2024, page 529).

Further information on the topic of ‘Green Travel’ can be found in the NA DAAD fact sheet.
