Diversity Day at HHN
You're exactly where you're meant to be
Department for Equity and Diversity
Every May...
... we shine a spotlight on the diversity of our campus life. Through our action days, we address issues that shape the experience of studying and working at HHN, and we advocate for a cosmopolitan and democratic university culture.
Excellent education, research, and scholarship require diverse perspectives! And diverse perspectives can only emerge if we persistently advocate for educational equity and equal opportunities for all people. That’s why we’ve once again celebrated this year under the motto of the Diversity Charter, because: “When diversity wins, we all win.” This is all the more important given the challenging political situation. Social background, a disability, an immigrant background, or gender are still—and increasingly so—reasons why people are marginalized and demeaned. Even people who stand up against discrimination and hostility toward others and advocate for more democracy and solidarity must expect resistance and are even put to the test by politicians.

That was our 2026 program
May 12-20: Diversity Days at Hochschule Heilbronn
Diversity Days at HHN are meant to be fun, to spark reflection, and above all to show that diversity affects us all! That’s why we once again visited all of the university’s campuses. The event kicked off on May 12 at the Künzelsau and Schwäbisch Hall campuses, followed by two more event days at the Bildungscampus and TechCampus on May 19 and 20.

Review
For the first time, the Diversity Action Days took place at all four HHN locations, featuring mobile interactive booths. Another first was the digital lecture series, which complemented the in-person events.
In his lecture “The Crisis of Democracy and the New Right,” Furkan Yüksel, an education specialist at the Anne Frank Educational Center, explored how the “new” right is attempting to position right-wing narratives at the center of society, thereby undermining core principles of the German Constitution, such as human dignity, equality, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. On another day, Lisa Zimmermann, diversity officer at the HHN, provided insight into the phenomenon of the Matilda Effect, which shed light on the reasons for the lack of recognition of women’s scientific achievements.

Following the launch of our Diversity Action Days at the Tech and Education Campuses in Heilbronn, the department’s team visited Künzelsau for the first time. The focus was on the 2024 European elections: Using excerpts from the “Wahl- & Sozial-O-Mat” and extensive informational materials, the EU’s achievements in the areas of science, education, and diversity were highlighted to encourage students to participate in the elections.
As part of the 2024 Action Days, the large poster exhibition “Women Scientists at HHN” was also opened at the Education Campus.
The Office for Equality and Diversity published, for the first time, the results of the university-wide diversity survey conducted at HHN in January 2024. The results provide insights into the composition of our university’s community as well as their perceptions of diversity-related aspects of the learning and working environment. For the first time, the survey also asked about subjectively perceived experiences of discrimination. The results were presented online by the Office in collaboration with Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Lenzen and Prof. Dr. Ruth Fleuchaus, Vice Rector for International Affairs and Diversity.

Everyone starts small: the inaugural edition of our Diversity Action Days took place on the tech and education campuses at two of our four locations. For the first time, the team from the Office for Equality and Diversity offered various interactive stations centered on the theme of diversity and used posters and artistic projects to send a clear message about a diversity-conscious university. The Heidelberg Student Union cafeteria also participated, offering special daily menus at the locations, including Serbian, Mexican, and Indian national dishes.
Under the guidance of political educator and photographer Sara Sun Hee Martischius and Diversity Officer Yvonne Tang, a photography project was created for and with students. The project highlighted students’ own perspectives and used photography as a means of empowerment.
As the highlight of the two-day event, a panel discussion on educational equity took place as part of the “wOrte wechseln” discussion series.
Principal Oliver Lenzen, author and educator Florence Brokowski-Shekete, and Josh Haberkern—a student and volunteer at arbeiterkind.de—discussed the existing barriers within the education system and how we can create better access and greater equality of opportunity. The panel was moderated by Sarah Bergh.
