Residence permit for the purpose of studying

Step 1: Registration of address

Within 2 weeks after your arrival, you must register your residence with the Residents‘ Registration Office “Bürgeramt” at the city hall (Rathaus) at the ground floor. This step is mandatory for all. After you have registered, get a confirmation of registration and keep this well as you need the confirmation of registration when you apply for the residence permit.

Due to coronavirus outbreak, if you are in Heilbronn an online appointment must be made in advance here or if you live in Schwäbisch Hall, you can just go to the Residents’ registration office during the opening hours.

Please bring the following documents:

  • Passport
  • ‰‰Confirmation of accommodation „Wohnungsgeberbestätigung“(provided by your landlord)


Step 2: Residence permit

Once you have registered, you must apply for a residence permit at the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde).

If you live in Schwäbisch Hall, you can get this form at the immigration office itself and drop the filled-out form in the mailbox at Gymnasiumstraße 2

Documents required:

  • Valid passport (Pass)
  • 1 current biometric photo

  • Application form for issuance or extension of a residence permit  (Antrag auf Erteilung oder Verlängerung einer Aufenthaltserlaubnis)
  • Confirmation form of registration _Proof of accommodation provided by the landlord
  • Proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherungsnachweis)
  • Proof of financing (Finanzierungsnachweis) -via blocked bank account the minimum annual amount  €10,236 (€853 per month), scholarship certificate or declaration of commitment by a third party)
  • Certificate of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheiniung). Download here with your login data
  • Certificate of registration of address (from Step 1)
  •  Fee:
    • 100.00 euros for the initial issuance
    • 93.00 euros for each extension
