MAKEitREAL
Mobile makerspace for girls from immigrant families
Through a participatory process, MAKEitREAL is developing a mobile makerspace for girls from immigrant backgrounds that connects with their social and physical environments, thereby providing low-barrier access to STEM. Project partners in the region support the initiative and facilitate the transition into existing STEM programs.

STEM Cluster: Mobile Makerspace for Girls from Immigrant Families

The mobile makerspace setting is ideal because it allows for direct interaction with children and teenagers during experiments, and STEM students with immigrant backgrounds from Heilbronn University can not only introduce the children to STEM content but also serve as mentors and show the girls:
What is MAKEitREAL
MAKEitREAL is a free, mobile STEM program for girls ages 10 to 16 in the Heilbronn region and the Hohenlohe district. In open workshops, girls can try their hand at technology, programming, and creative design—no registration required, no prior knowledge needed, and no pressure to perform.
MAKEitREAL is not a course, but an open workshop format:
Participants are welcome to drop by, discover new things, try out different activities, and explore their own ideas. They’ll be guided by student role models in a safe and supportive environment.
The project is being carried out by Heilbronn University, under the academic direction of Prof. Dr. Nicola Marsden and coordinated by Nicole Dierolf.
MAKEitREAL is an evolution of the former Heilbronn STEM Cluster, which received funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2021 to 2025. During this phase, the program was established, tested, and refined in collaboration with numerous regional stakeholders.
Since 2026, MAKEitREAL has been continued as a permanent educational program and is funded by foundations and local governments in the region.
