fair.impact
The goal of the fair.impact project is to translate research on socially responsible AI into practical applications in order to develop fair AI systems and promote diversity and inclusion throughout the entire AI development process.
The project has two main focuses: First, it examines AI systems in which algorithms and data can perpetuate and exacerbate existing injustices; second, it examines the environment in which AI is developed, where a lack of diversity and unintentionally discriminatory practices lead to the creation of AI systems that fail to fully realize their potential for value creation and innovation.
As part of this research project, we have developed three AI Campus courses that teach the fundamentals and methods of socially responsible AI design and implementation in an interactive and practical manner.
Our courses on socially responsible AI design:

Using our framework, this course introduces the fundamentals of socially responsible AI design through practical examples and interactive exercises.

AI development and implementation can only be achieved through teamwork. This course teaches team practices that support the fair and inclusive design and implementation of AI.

This course explores methods for reducing bias and stereotypes in AI design and implementation that can be directly applied in a professional setting.

Research Approach and Contribution
In line with the goal of regionalizing AI Campus activities, the fair.impact project supports the establishment of a regional AI Campus hub in Baden-Württemberg/Heilbronn as part of the AI Innovation Park through a framework comprising three components:
AI Campus programs designed to build expertise in socially responsible AI development and diversity and gender equity in AI (working titles: “Fairness in AI Systems” and “Fairness in AI Organizations”).
Workshops featuring interactive participation by company representatives, researchers, and young AI professionals to foster networking and iterative feedback on content and formats.
Recommendations for action that are developed, presented, and discussed through an iterative reflection process, which companies can use in the context of AI to build diversity and gender competence, implement measures for cultural change, and attract and retain more female professionals.

The fair.impact project is funded by the Heilbronn AI Foundation through the Stifterverband.
