for all university members
To use VPN access via eduVPN, you must have successfully completed the initial registration with your username and your initial password.
You can download the software directly from the eduVPN download page at https://www.eduvpn.org/client-apps/. There you can install the eduVPN client/app. Select the correct download for your operating system (e.g., Windows, macOS, Android).
If the installation does not start automatically, open the “Downloads” folder and run the installation file. Once the installation is complete, restart your computer. It is essential to restart your computer before using eduVPN for the first time.
Note for employees: If your computer is managed by the Rechenzentrum, eduVPN is automatically installed on your device. In this case, you do not need to perform the installation manually and can proceed to step 2.
The second step is to select Heilbronn University as an institution. eduVPN supports two operating modes (1. Access to the institute and 2. Secure Internet).
Please always select the first mode: Access to the institute.
This will give you, as a member of the university, access to the internal services of our institution. Under Find your institute, enter hhn and select Institute Access.
Please note: Do NOT select Heilbronn University under Secure Internet!
In the third step, you must establish the connection via your browser (Mozilla Firefox/Chrome/Edge).
A browser window will open automatically with the HHN login page. Use your new account here, i.e., your username AND your new password AND the second factor (one-time password app OR Yubikey).
If you have not yet successfully completed the initial registration for your access data, you will not be able to use the VPN access (please click here for information on the required initial registration).
After successfully logging in with your new account, the “Approve Application” page will open in your browser window. You must now approve VPN access in your browser. Click on the blue “Approve” button.
The message “You can now close this browser window” will then appear.
Close the browser window and switch back to the eduVPN app if it does not automatically come to the foreground.
You can now choose between different profiles, such as “Old World Access” or “Standard Network Students”/“Standard Network Employees.”
Here you will find an overview of which systems you can access with which profile.
After selecting the appropriate profile, click on the slider/toggle to activate the connection. You will then be connected to the VPN for up to 12 hours.

After selecting the appropriate profile, click on the slider/toggle to activate the connection. You will then be connected to the VPN for up to 12 hours.
You now have access to the desired service as if you were on campus (i.e., you may still be using your old login details).
Please note: While you are accessing legacy systems in the “Old World Access” VPN profile, Internet access is disabled.
Please read the following instructions and tips for using VPN if you encounter any problems while using it.
You can select different profiles in the eduVPN app. The systems currently available, which you can access via the different profiles, are listed below.
The “Old World Access” profile gives you intranet access and allows you to access other internal HHN applications.
The VPN profile “Standardnetz Studierende...” gives you access to the internet as an HHN student. You can authenticate yourself as an HHN student to external services.
The VPN profile “Employees...” gives you access to systems in the new environment.
The VPN profile “Students Faculty IB/T1/IT/X” gives you access to specific applications for the faculties.
