COIL and Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs)
What is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)?
A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) within the Erasmus+ framework is a short-term, collaboratively developed learning programme delivered by at least three higher education institutions from three different Erasmus+ programme countries. It combines innovative digital teaching and learning approaches with a short physical mobility component abroad, lasting between 5 and 30 days. Successful completion of a BIP must be recognised with a minimum of 3 ECTS credits for participating students.
By bringing together students, academics, researchers, and professionals from diverse cultural, disciplinary, and institutional backgrounds, Blended Intensive Programmes contribute to the strengthening of international cooperation, intercultural dialogue, and interdisciplinary learning. The integration of virtual and face-to-face learning environments enables participants to engage in intensive international collaboration while offering a flexible and sustainable form of mobility.
Selected mobile participants, i. e. students and higher education staff participating in Erasmus staff mobility for training purposes, may be eligible for Erasmus+ financial support, subject to consultation with the International Office.
Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences actively participates in the Blended Intensive Programme action under Erasmus+ Key Action 131 (KA131) and has successfully coordinated numerous Blended Intensive Programmes as a lead institution and also participated as a partner in many BIPs.
What is COIL?
COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is an innovative international teaching and learning format that connects students and lecturers from different countries through virtual collaboration. By working together on joint projects, participants gain intercultural experience and develop global competencies in an online or blended learning environment.

Heilbronn University is expanding its international collaborative learning opportunities through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL).
Today, students may work on a case study together with peers from a university in the United States; tomorrow, they might take part in a statistics course alongside students from a partner institution in Israel. At HHN, the world is becoming more connected than ever.
Internationalization and digitalization go hand in hand. Digital technologies make it easier and more natural to build new connections, especially across borders, and to learn together in an international environment. Through COIL, students and lecturers collaborate with international partners, gain intercultural experience, and develop the skills needed to succeed in a globalized world.
