Planning Your Study Abroad

Please attend the information sessions offered by the International Office and the faculties regarding opportunities for studying abroad. The event dates will be announced in due time or communicated by the faculties.

Gather information about the partner universities suitable for your degree program, their course offerings, and the application process for a study abroad stay.

You can obtain this information from:

  • the International Office and the presentation for your faculty “Studying Abroad” provided on this page (right-hand box),
  • the faculty’s study abroad coordinator,
  • the contact persons for the partner universities (see partner university lists).

Clarify in advance with the respective contact persons for which period you can go to the partner university. Please note that at many partner universities it is only possible to study abroad during the summer semester to a limited extent or not at all (semester at the partner university may start as early as January, fewer courses offered in the summer semester).

Areas of responsibility

The faculty is responsible for:

  • Subject-related inquiries (e.g., regarding Proof of Recognition (POR), Learning Agreement (LA), ECTS, etc.)
  • Confirmation of subject content or language proficiency, etc.
  • Grade recognition

The International Office is responsible for:

  • The application process
  • The administrative handling of mobility
  • Scholarships for study abroad
Applying as a FREEMOVER

You can go abroad as a freemover; however, you will need to take care of everything yourself.

It is advisable to prepare a PoR (Plan of Research) in advance. Find a professor who will supervise you during this period and sign the PoR.

Important: As a freemover, you are not allowed to go to a partner university with which HHN already has an agreement.

Funding option: Foundation scholarship

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Bonn offers various funding opportunities for Germans to study abroad. All current information, application deadlines, and application documents can be found in the DAAD scholarship database.
