Project description:

The United Arab Emirates, in particular Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are a destination in the Middle East of great interest. Over the years, through management of global events (e.g. World Government Summit, Dubai Future Forum, Expo 2020, Formula 1, etc.) and other key strategic decisions has put itself in the forefront of international affairs.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG), part of the Government of Dubai, UAE, became a COIL partner in 2023. MBRSG, among its portfolio, offers master programs in the areas of innovation management, policy and public administration. This dovetails nicely with our MBK course (Business Administration, Culture, Leisure, and Sport Management) where amongst others we discuss the importance of public-private-partnerships and the role of governance in these sectors. A significant part of the COIL project allowed students from both universities (UAE and Germany) to work together in virtual teams on current issues in the field of 'leadership and communication' in a global context. In addition to expanding their specialist knowledge, they gained intercultural experiences where they realized the importance of communication and the role of culture. Further, students were able to apply and expand their English language skills. The project allowed both groups of students to hear first-hand the “expert knowledge” from the professors. In addition, the project will also result in research output and new teaching cases.

Relevant project stages of the first COIL MRBSG edition 2023:

  • January and February 2023 - design and planning of the project by defining framework, goals and content
  • February to June 2023 - Teaching: Joint classes, thereof one physical class in each campus and three blended; the use of flipped classroom and case study teaching in joint classes
  • June 2023: Debrief with students and committee presentation (Faculty Council Meeting on 28th of June 2023), reflection and outlook for further edition in 2024

Duration:

The project is supposed to continue in 2024.
