A joint course with the partner university Universidad de Chile and the MOLIT Institute for Personalised Medicine will take place in the winter semester 2024/25 as part of the Master's programme in Medical Informatics. As part of the course, ten students from Heilbronn University and ten students from the Universidad de Chile will be working on the international specification of the Patient Summary (IPS).
During the course, the students will work on various use cases and implement demonstrators based on the international medical informatics standard FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).
The IPS Challenge will conclude in Chile in January 2025. There, the students will work together to further develop and present their use cases and demonstrators. The group will also take part in a Connectathon organised by the standardisation organisation HL7 Chile to present their experiences with the IPS and discuss them with industry representatives from nine different South American countries.
In addition to the exchange of content on interoperable standards for medical data exchange, students can gain intercultural experience in Chile and gain valuable insights into the healthcare system of another country.
Prof Christian Fegeler, Stefan Sigle (MOLIT) and Maximilian Kurscheidt are supervising the IPS Challenge on the HHN side. Prof. Steffen Härtel and Alonzo Carvayal are coordinating the project for the Universidad de Chile.

The ‘International Patient Summary’, or IPS for short, is used for cross-border data exchange in order to map and summarize health data and medical histories in an interoperable manner. This could also be used for electronic patient records, for example.
