What does HHN IDEAL stand for?  What does the project comprise?

HHN IDEAL stands for Internationalisation through Digitally Enriched Active Study Preparation & Collaborative Learning and comprises three subprojects.

These three subprojects support

1) the further development of the HHN internationalisation strategy

2) the anchoring of international collaborative blended learning concepts in the HHN curriculum and

3) the improvement of counselling, information and support services for the preparation of studies for international and exchange-interested students.

The HHN IDEAL project is funded as part of the DAAD programme "UAS.International" in module A.

The aim of the DAAD programme initiative "UAS.International" is to strengthen the international competitiveness, performance and cultural openness of universities of applied sciences. Moreover, students are to be prepared for the future global labour market. Furthermore, the programme strives for close cooperation with business and industry to increase the educative, research-oriented and innovative potential of universities of applied sciences. Finally, the programme is designed to help strategically position universities on an international level to increase the demand of becoming international partners of them.

Module A of the UAS International programme supports universities of applied science in further developing and implementing their internationalisation strategy. In doing so, the internationalisation strategy is to be linked to strategies for digitalisation and equality of opportunities.

In addition, Module A supports the development of networks for studying, teaching, research, practice and transfer with national and international partners from research and industry.

Finally, Module A also promotes preparatory and supervisory measures for studies and practice both in Germany and abroad.

During the project duration from January 2021 to December 2022, these plans will be supported by the DAAD with a funding of almost 500,000 euros - from grants from the BMBF.

Within the subproject 1, the HHN internationalisation strategy is to be further developed.

For this purpose, a target-performance analysis is carried out to identify strengths and weaknesses of the current internationalisation strategy and digitalisation impulses of the European Commission are incorporated in the Erasmus programme. The focus is on internationalisation@home. Furthermore, current topics like education for sustainable development and greater inclusion are to be integrated to an even greater extent.

The University Communication and Centre for Study and Teaching (ZfSL) /E-Learning departments are also integrated into the integral implementation of the strategy.

The aim is to have the further developed internationalisation strategy passed by the senate.

Subproject 2 focuses on the internationalisation of the curriculum through international, collaborative and blended learning concepts, which HHN lecturers develop together with lecturers from foreign partner universities.

This is also referred to as telecollaboration or COIL ("Collaborative Online International Learning") projects.

The aim of the HHN is to expand the classic COIL concept and to also include partners from industry in addition to international scientific partners in order to establish the required practice-orientation according to the principles of a university of applied sciences.

For this purpose, three cross-faculty pilot projects are being planned:

1) pilot project of the faculty of International Business (IB)

2) pilot project of the faculties Business and Transport Management (WV) /Mechanics and Electronics (T1)

3) pilot project of the faculty Informatics (IT)

The three pilot projects are being carried out to test the applicability of the new teaching concepts and to develop and expand relevant competences in the area of virtual interaction.

The pilot projects are accompanied didactically. Experiences are evaluated and best practices are established. In this way, they can be used as "lighthouse projects" that are important for further projects through the development of a holistic didactic guide.

Further training opportunities on the one hand and networking opportunities - both with project partners and with peers - on the other hand are being created for HHN lecturers to further develop their digitalisation and internationalisation skills. In addition, they are provided with technical support.

The new international teaching concepts expand the existing range of courses and support students in acquiring digital, intercultural, foreign language and specialist skills. Furthermore, they also have the opportunity to test their competences in practical-oriented cases through the involvement of partners from the working world.

Thus, the collaborative and blended learning concepts not only contribute significantly to the internationalisation@home at HHN, but also to foreign partner universities.

IDEAL for you

Subproject 3 promotes the support and advice of international students and students interested in exchange.

Virtual consultation hours and advising as well as online seminars and events provide a direct contact person and make it easier for prospective students to get in touch. The point of contact for study preparation, which was set up specifically for this purpose, is an extremely important part of better preparing international students for studying at HHN and overcoming uncertainties about studying and everyday life in a foreign country.

Furthermore, subproject 3 offers provision of information "on demand". The conception and production of virtual campus tours, explanatory videos, testimonials and experience reports aims to support the study orientation of international and exchange-interested students as well as to increase the visibility of our intercultural exchange.
